罗马 意大利 Banks and Currency

Banks and Currency

For those who are not in the know or just are not well-informed, the lire is not an official currency of Italy any more. It disappeared into history on March 1, 2002, as it was replaced by euro, as well as in other 11 countries-participants of European Union. The new single European currency became the official one on January 1, 1999.

When starting fro Rome, you should know that it is more convenient to exchange currency at the point of arrival, but, of course, you can do it beforehand, just in order to be on the save side. The best way for exchanging your currency is, obviously, at a bank, as it is safer. In the case you dispose of checks, you should know that currency and travelers' checks (for which you'll receive better rates than cash) can be changed at all main airports and at some travel agencies, among which are American Express and Thomas Cook.

You can get your money from an automated teller machine if you have an international card. The most frequently used are American Express, Master Card, Visa. And, of course, a credit card, which you are to use almost in any public place, in your hotel, supermarket, so on. Besides, it offers relatively good exchange rates.

You are unlikely to have any problems when looking for a bank in Rome, moreover, it is even unnecessary to look for it, as there is a bank on every corner in this very city. They are usually open from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., though the opening hours can be slightly changed from bank to bank. And some banks are open overtime on Saturday and Sunday.

The main and most important banks of Rome are: the Royal Bank of Scotland, First Niagara Bank, Bank of America.
