The theatre of ancient Rome refers to the dramatic performances, staged in Rome during the classic antiquity. There were a couple of big theatres in Rome, where the plays were performed on the open air (that was the way how the Romans solved the problems with light and sound). They could last for about a couple of days or even weeks. Women were not allowed to play so their parts were confirmed to men or boys, wearing white masks. Special symbols were worked out. The thing is the actors wore the masks while performing on the stage, and those masks were brown for men and white for women, they expressed sadness, melancholy, or happy feelings, depending on the character of the play. These plays were sacred for Roman, as the theatre was accepted as the only way to distract from the routine life, if omitting the gladiator fights.
